Keeping Momentum

Happy Wednesday IHD family! It's hard to believe we are in our final week of our fall session. We are looking forward to some time to rest and recharge over the Holidays and have some long awaited time with our friends and family. Over the past few months we've watched our dancers grown in so many ways and being back in the studio has given all the opportunity to take our training back up a notch. While we are looking forward to some time off we don't want to let our training or the momentum we've gathered to slide. Here are some ways we can keep up with our training over the break and be ready to keep moving in the New Year.

Take Time to Rest

You might be saying, "Wait a minute. Didn't you say we were talking about keeping up with our training." Yes. While it is important to keep a routine and practice regularly when it comes to training, it is equally as important to find time to rest. After a couple of months of learning new skills, building strength and remembering choreography our bodies and brains may need some time to focus on some other things. Take some of the extra time you have over the break to take a bath, read a book you've been meaning to get to or connect with a friend you haven't seen in a while. This rest period will give you the space you need to get excited about your training and physically and mentally ready to give it your all.

Find Balance

While it is important to find moments to rest over the break, we don't want to forget about our training completely. Whether it's giving yourself a daily stretch, experimenting with a skill you've been eager to master or going over your choreography in your head, even a small amount of effort can contribute to your training over the break. Make sure you are finding some balance. Spending all your time away from your training can leave you feeling overwhelmed, behind and out of shape when you return to the studio. Spending every waking hour thinking about dance can leave you feeling disconnected, over worked and uninspired over your break. It's important to find balance.

Dedicate Time

So how do we find balance in a such a busy time like the Holiday Season? Time management is an important skill for any dancer or athlete and when we're on vacation it is no different. Get to know what plans your family has for the time off, write down the things you would like to accomplish and then schedule your training around that. Like we said before, even 10 minutes of stretching or going over choreography or corrections can help you keep up your momentum. We are sure the Holidays will fly by. Make sure you are dedicating some time to your training.

Get Creative

Get creative about the ways you are training over the break. Switching things up and looking at things differently can help you feel refreshed and recharged and just make training more fun! What about putting on a show for your friends or family, showing them your routines at home. You could grab a friend and do a winter wonderland photoshoot outside, showing off and practicing some of your favourite skills and tricks. Not feeling inspired to stretch? Grab your mom and put on a yoga or pilates YouTube video you can do together.

We are so proud of the work we have done together in this first session of dance. Our advice to you this Holiday Season is to find time to recharge, dedicate some time to your training and get creative about how you practice on your time off. We cannot wait for what the rest of this dance year has in store. Happy Holidays and see you in 2022!
