Tips on Setting Goals for the New Year

The New Year is often seen as a blank slate. A time to take a look at what you’d like to achieve and set resolutions looking into the New Year. As artists, athletes, dancers we think it is important to set and work toward achieving goals consistently throughout your training and work, beyond the New Year. Here are our steps in setting and achieving goals for your new session at IHD.

Think about what you want. What are the steps that have always frustrated you? What are the corrections your are consistently given? What are the things that you have admired or felt envious of that you have seen in your peers or other dancers? What do you think would take you to the next level as a dancer or performer or what would take something off your plate either emotionally or physically? Write all these things down. Read through the list and highlight  and choose to work on what you personally feel passionate about.

Think about how to get there. What will it take to achieve this goal? What corrections or advice have you already been given about this skill or technique? What has stopped you from already achieving this goal? Write all of these things down. Fill in gaps or empty spaces by asking questions. Ask your teacher questions about stretches, techniques or concepts you could apply. Ask your peers that have already achieved this goal or who you admire what they have done or heard in the past. Get online and so some research yourself and work on putting these ideas to practice.

Think about when you want to get there. Set a timeline. How much time can you realistically put into achieving this goal? Is there a certain time that you would like to be able to use this new goal? Be realistic about the pressures or timeline of your goal but be aware that your putting an end to your endeavors might put some needed pressure to achieve it.

Be positive. We all live in a world of instant gratification. We all want things to happen fast but some things take time. As people and dancers in particular, we will always have something to work on. Sometimes when we believe we have reached a goal we realize that there is something more difficult and daunting to achieve at the end. Teachers and mentors are there to encourage and challenge so be gracious when given correction. Determination, confidence and the belief that you have the ability to achieve whatever goal you set will go further than you could ever imagine.

Be bold, dream big and believe in yourself! Happy New Year and Happy Goal setting from IHD!
